Another Entrant in the Mobile Monitor Market

I heard from more than a few readers regarding my post on the MMT Field Pro mobile monitor last week . The message was consistent -- you missed the Toshiba competitor! You’re right, I did. My bad. BUT --- there’s ALWAYS a but --- it turns out that I’m standing by my original recommendation. 

Toshiba’s entry is a 14-inch USB Mobile LCD Monitor for $200. It’s lighter, cheaper, and does not require a separate power brick. Game over, Toshiba wins, right? Not so fast, there Pilgrim, let’s look under those specs and see what’s REALLY going on.

Screen size: MMT Field Monitor Pro, at 15.4” is 20% larger than the Toshiba. I could live with that except the Toshiba screen, when powered only by USB, is so dim as to approach being useless. The standard measurement for screen luminosity is the “nit” and the generally acceptable line between “fair” and “good” is 225 nits. The USB powered Toshiba is rated at <150 nits. With the AC adapter (an additional $40) it’s not as dim, but still gets to only 220 nits. The MMT screen output is a very solid 232 nits. And the Toshiba screen is fixed at a 40 degree tilt while the MMT provides 180 degree tilt AND 180 degree rotation.

The Toshiba requires 2 USB ports and provides none; the MMT uses 1 port and provides two. The Toshiba is ~1 pound lighter than the MMT but the MMT case is die-cast aluminum which I suspect will have a much longer life than the Toshiba’s “faux leather”. Portrait mode? Only with the MMT, the Toshiba can’t do it. Same with Kensington lock. And daisy chaining. The MMT will chain up to 6. No chaining provided with the Toshiba. Oh, and let’s remember the MMT’s numeric keypad --- after all, we ARE accountants, right?

IMHO this is quite clearly a “you get what you pay for” decision. If you’re looking for an extra screen for casual use perhaps the Toshiba will work for you. But for the rigors of day-after-day field work I’m sticking with my recommendation. The MMT Field Monitor Pro is a fieldwork capable, light weight, thinly profiled, portable, durable and affordable dual monitor solution that deserves a hard look by firms doing a lot of field work.

(Electronics) I just purchased this TV to reapcle my Samsung 27 tube HDTV which was an absolute beast (147 lbs!). This TV is WONDERFUL! It's the 3rd Toshiba LCD in my house (also have a 32 in my bedroom and a 19 in the home office). The picture is crystal clear with rich, bright, vibrant colors. I watch a lot of sports and play video games on this TV and it performs great for both. There aren't noticeable tracers when watching fast action. I wish it had a regular a/v sound output (red & white), but it only offers a digital audio output which doesn't work w/ my out-dated receiver (not the TV's fault). I compared this side-by-side to LG's similarly priced 37 model and it blew the LG away. The picture was brighter, clearer, and lost less quality at an angle. I've noticed some reviews that are critical of the TV's sound, but I'm not having any issues with it. I'm sure it doesn't compare to the sound quality of a home theatre system, but it isn't any worse than any other TV I've owned. If you're looking to get the most bang for your buck on a moderately priced lcd TV, this is the one.

: It took all afternoon and into the enneivg to get the unit talking to my LinkSys WRT54G wireless router. The wireless communication was connected, the router had assigned an IP address, but the NB205 refused to get it. It sat at acquiring IP address until it timed out. I have a static IP block reserved on my router, so I gave the NB205 a static IP address and filled in the gateway and DNS server IPs, and it *still* wouldn't talk. In technical parlance, it wasn't just a problem with ARP the entire transport layer simply wasn't working. A wired connection to the router worked fine. But that wasn't a workaround that I was prepared to accept. I researched on the Web and found that various Toshiba models seem to have a lot of trouble with wireless, and that there are probably a hundred different things that people said finally got theirs working. What finally worked for me was to turn off WEP security on both the router and the NB205. That immediately got them talking, at the expense of breaking all of my other wireless links (two computers and a Wii). Then I turned WEP back on, and they stayed talking. No problems since. EDITED: after over two months, still no problem. It was just the one-time startup. #2 (good): The battery life is pretty danged long. Maybe not the claimed nine hours, but seven or eight (with WiFi turned off and using power-saver profile). I suspect that a good part of that comes from using an e-IPS display. #3 (bad but expected): The manual is provided on the hard drive, not in print. The manual is disorganized and mostly useless. This seems to be par for the course for modern computers. #4 (very slightly bad): The manual says that if you shut the unit down by closing the lid (sleep mode, hibernate, or whatever) that when you open the lid it'll start back up. It doesn't. You have to press the power button. EDITED: It will come back on automatically if you've left it plugged into AC power the whole time. It doesn't if it's unplugged, which for me is pretty much always . #5 EDITED: (very annoying until I figured out what was wrong): I had given up on using Sleep/Standby mode because about half of the time when I turned it back on the unit completely rebooted. Hibernate mode always seemed to work. The problem turned out to be that one of the latches for the battery pack wasn't locked, and the netbook would lose power if the unit was lifted in a way that tried to separate the pack from the main unit. So it was my own error, but I learned to pay attention to those latches. #6 (generally good): I got this netbook specifically for writing. The keyboard seemed to be the best available in the netbook form factor, and I'm finding the keyboard to be quite usable for extended typing sessions. A couple of keys got relocated into funky positions, though. (Maybe other netbook keyboards do the same, I don't know.) #7 (good): The touchpad is the first one that I've found to be actually usable. #8 (mildly concerning): I had to turn off the vibration alerts because every time I click the touchpad, it sets off the vibration detector. So good keyboard, good touchpad, good display, good battery life. That's what I needed, and it's working out well. But I have collected some scars from the rough edges of getting it set up and the power on/off arrangements. FIVE DAYS LATER (an update): I'm really enjoying this little guy. I finally got everything configured the way that I want, and I love working with it. My only day-to-day complaint is a silly one: I sometimes write while lying down, with my legs bent and the netbook propped against my legs, and in that position the clicker buttons on the touchpad rest against my belly and tend to click when I don't want them to. I've learned to use Fn-F9 to disable the touchpad while I'm doing that.

(Electronics) General: I bought this TV to relapce my beloved Toshiba CRT HDTV. I was a bit worried about the fact that Toshiba does not like to post the contrast ratio as well as their response time, but I knew that my CRT had a great picture and thought I would give this TV a chance. I am glad that I did. First this is not a high end TV so as a result the picture quality is definitely not going to blow you away. The picture is decent though and has accurate color and works well for all kinds of viewing: HD sports (nbc football), Television programs (HD and cable tv), Blu ray (LOST), and PC (actually a mac hooked up through the HDMI). Where this TV really shines is the features, especially if you own a PS3. Features: This TV only displays 720p (1366 768, like most 720p LCD's) but you are able to input 1080p so that the TV down-scales to 768 lines from 1080 lines of resolution to give you a great looking picture. This TV also accepts the 24hz 1080p signal from a PS3 or other blu ray player to give you the closest experience to film quality which this TV does a decent enough job handling this conversion, however to be honest there is not a whole lot of difference between having the 24hz on or off on the PS3. The Regza link is awesome. I have a PS3 hooked up through a Sony HDMI receiver the link controls the receiver power and volume with the TV remote it also controls the PS3 playback and XMB menu. Basically the link allowed me to go from 3 remotes to watch blu ray to only one and allows me to switch back to watching cable only using the TV remote (I should note that I have unscrambled cable, no cable box). Picture: The contrast ratio is definitely helped by the dynalight feature that locally dims parts of the picture that are black but you will still need to tweak the backlight settings depending on weather your lights are on or off. The main problem with the picture is dark scenes in movies in a bright room. The dynalight helps to keep blacks dark, but it would help to have 2 picture settings that were user defined for lights on and lights off, because the movie picture setting is pretty much useless unless you are lucky enough that it works for your setup. Also I have noticed the TV has trouble going from black to white in quick cuts in movies. You can see pixels that go from really dark to really bright are struggling to keep up with the rest of the picture. The picture quality is very good for a Television at this price. I struggled getting a LCD Television because I hated the pixelation that I noticed on all of my friends Televisions that adopted LCD and Plasma early. This TV has verly little pixelation, the picture is sharp and has spot on colors. For cable and OTA signals the cable clear helps to make pictures look smooth and clear. I own the first 5 seasons of lost on Blu ray and this is the most beautiful it has ever looked. Gaming: As you might have guessed I am more of a movie buff than video gamer, but games are important. I've played a few games and I must say the gaming mode is for real. I played Gran Turismo 5 prologue and the picture was perfect and experienced no noticeable lag. Do not be confused the gaming mode is not just another view setting, it turns off all the unnecessary processing to allow there to be less lag between the gaming system and the display. My CRT was perfect for gaming, CRT's are great because there is no lag, and this LCD does it's best to mimic the little to no lag CRT. Sound: Let's face it TV speakers are not going to blow you away. So this TV is pretty average. Where it really excels is it's ability to work with a linked receiver. It knows when I switch to my PS3 to let the receiver do it's thing and when I'm watching cable the TV tells the receiver to switch to the TV input. Also any audio input on the TV is passed on to the optical digital output. The sound coming through the receiver is great and the intelligence of the input switching through the link is so much better than just having a universal remote. Final Thoughts: This TV will not be the center piece of a demo quality home theater set-up, but at the price it is good at what it does. Which is display great HD for a 32inch TV. The great thing about this TV is it provides all the functionality without charging you extra for bells and whistles that will not improve your experience. Pros: Regza Link for HDMI controls PS3 and HDMI Receivers Dynalight helps contrast ratio Decent picture for all sources. 24hz input compatibility for Blu ray 1080p input compatibility to get all 768 lines of resolution on TV Gaming Mode Good Value Cons: Black to white response time could be better. Only one set of user defined picture settings. TV Sound alone is sub-par for this price range.
