I fully admit and actually embrace my geekyness so it’s easy to tell you how excited things like this are!! Here are three links to free downloads that WILL make you’re life better, if only for a few hours. While the rest of America shops and watches football I’ll continue downloading and installing and playing and learning ….
KINDLE: Amazon has released an update for the Kindle which, according their site, offers these improvements:
- Longer battery life for Kindle (Global Wireless): You can
now read for up to 1 week on a single charge with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks.
- Built-in PDF reader: Your Kindle can now display PDF documents without losing the formatting of the original file. Send PDF documents directly to your Kindle (via your @Kindle address) or drag and drop PDF files from your computer to your Kindle (when connected via USB).
- Manual screen rotation: The Kindle screen can now manually rotate between portrait and landscape views so you can see the entire width of a web page or magnify the page of a PDF file. The page-turn buttons work the same in either orientation, and the 5-way controller movements are switched to match the orientation.
- Option to convert PDF files to Kindle format. If you prefer to have your personal PDF documents converted to the Kindle format (so that they can reflow), type "Convert" in the subject of the e-mail when you submit your personal document to your @kindle.com address.
Here are the instructions for the update --- or, you can just let your Kindle download and install automatically, but THAT’S no fun!!
WINDOWS HOME SERVER: Microsoft has released PowerPack 3 for the WHS. It makes storing and accessing your media easier by bringing all the content contained on your Home Server into your Windows 7 libraries. If you have Windows 7, PP3 is a very useful update. You can check which version of Windows Home Server you are running by clicking on the Settings Tab in the Windows Home Server Console, and clicking on Resources. The update can be installed by clicking on the Settings Tab in the Windows Home Server Console, then Update Now.
Again, you COULD let your WHS grab and install --- but if you’re a geek…..
OFFICE 2010: The beta is now open to anyone. I’ve been using 2010 for several months and find many of the features quite helpful. A real geek would probably download and experiment on at least one machine --- after all, what else will you have to talk about at cocktail parties?
