Our friends at Business Week have released their list of “The World’s Most Influential Companies” and included several that are familiar and important to practicing tax and accounting professionals. Foremost of interest here is Intuit --- making the list because of their market dominance (almost 80% of the consumer tax preparation software market and 90% of the small-biz accounting software market, according to BW) and, more importantly I think, because of CEO Brad Smith’s bold plans to “stay ahead of the curve by introducing Web-based tools for personal finance management”.
Other players of particular interest to us making the list include Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Not surprisingly there a few “left-fielders” on the list, too. Namely FaceBook. While it’s a stretch today to directly tie FaceBook to the practice of public accounting it’s interesting that I hear “social networking” being talked about more and more as related to the profession and how we’ll be interacting with each other, our vendors, and our clients in the not-too-distant future.
The BW story is an interesting read --- and it’s fun to see good companies recognized.
