A Dutch hacker, Mark Hoekstra, has announced his latest attack on the WiFi infrastructure. Last week at the NJ Society of CPAs Technology Show I delivered a presentation entitled "Over the Shoulder of a Wireless Hacker" and the group (200+) was quite engaged. They were very interested as I stepped them through the tricks and techniques the bad guys employ to steal from the rest of us. There was a lot of discussion around the concept of "stealing" open bandwidth.
Now I know that "guns don't kill people...." and I'm sure there is someone, somewhere that can think of a legitimate use for this device, it's just not me, now.
The Slurpr reportedly grabs up to six WiFi signals and aggregates them into a single connection. It claims to run Linux from a CF card and includes a 266M Hz MIPS CPU with 64MB RAM. Both the hardware and software will be released utilizing Creative Commons licenses so users can build their own Slurprs and and modify the software. Think of this as using SIX straws to drink a milkshake .... you can down it pretty fast that way, right? And now think of a conversation with your doctor where she tells you that you shouldn't be drinking milk shakes. Well, you shouldn't be STEALING WiFi EITHER!!!
Go figure.
